Chelsea, Real Madrid: Five clubs who could sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United haveofficially parted ways with Cristiano Ronaldo, with the big question now on everybodys lips being who will be the Portuguese internationals next club.

At 37, very few sides will be interested in signing Ronaldo given his previous 500,000-a-week wages at United and his recent attitude problems with the Red Devils under Erik Ten Hag. However, some clubs might still be keen to have one of footballs biggest superstars on their books for the next year or so.

Indeed, Ronaldos next club and move will be a blockbuster move in the sport. And whilst the attackers involvement in the 2022 FIFA World Cup might take centre stage for now, the veterans future will now become a huge talking point in the coming weeks.

With that in mind, here are five clubs who could make a move for Ronaldo as the former United and Juventus superstar looks to sign for what could be his final team in his staggering and historic playing career.

If theres one Premier League club who are careless enough to sign Ronaldo despite his nightmare season with United, its Chelsea, with the Athletic reporting that the new Blues owner Todd Boehly was desperate to sign Ronaldo in the summer despite protests from Thomas Tuchel.

Whilst Chelsea now have transfer experts in place to steer the west London side back to the top under Graham Potter, Boehly could once again look to sign Ronaldo despite the obvious red flags surrounding the Portuguese superstar, and it wouldnt be too shocking to see the Premier League giants move for the 37-year-old.

MLS feels like one of the most likely destinations for Ronaldo in 2023, and with United legend David Beckham owning a club in Inter Miami, the Florida-based franchise make for an obvious choice for Ronaldo when selecting his next club.

Having just made it to the MLS play-offs under Phil Neville in the 2022 season, swapping Manchester for Miami could be appealing for Ronaldo despite a lack of European football. And with the profile of the league increasing every year, the attacker could finally make his move to break America with football becoming as popular as ever in the country.

Newcastle Uniteds newfound wealth makes the third-place Premier League side an obvious candidate to sign Ronaldo. However, given Eddie Howes recent streak of sensible signings, the Magpies actually moving for the 37-year-old feels as unlikely as it sounds ludicrous.

However, whilst Newcastle have made excellent progress under Howe, the Magpies are yet to make that huge superstar signing. And whilst Ronaldo might not fit the long-term vision of the club, there could be some temptation to move for the former United megastar with the opportunity there on the table.

Ronaldos tenure at Real Madrid will go down as one of the best club careers in football history, with the attacker discovering his goalscoring proficiency in Spain and winning every piece of silverware possible for Los Blancos. And the forward leaving United could open up a possible return to La Liga.

With Karim Benzema out injured, Ronaldo and Madrid could be tempted to agree on a comeback over four years since leaving the Spanish capital. And with Eden Hazard set to leave in January, the Portuguese star could be handed his favoured no. 7 shirt to sweeten the deal.

Madrid might be the most realistic comeback Ronaldo could make in the coming weeks, yet for many football fans, the attacker returning to Sporting Lisbon where it all began would be nothing short of a perfect way for the forward to end his footballing career.

Regulars in Europe, Sporting could pull off a miracle by signing Ronaldo after the World Cup if the striker is keen on a return to Portugal. And whilst no UEFA Champions League football could be a sticking point, the Lisbon giants are well-suited to win the race for their former academy star in 2023.
